Every real estate agent has the same tools at hand: newspaper and magazine ads, websites, social media, email blasts, curated photography, glossy brochures and open houses. But not every broker wields these tools with equal acumen. Armed with a degree in design and visual communication, I honed my marketing and branding skills during more than two decades of providing smart, innovative solutions that helped Fortune 500 corporations and leading nonprofits build stronger brands and more meaningful relationships with customers and stakeholders.
With that background and 20+ years’ experience in real estate, today I create marketing that communicates the tangible and intangible characteristics that make my clients’ homes uniquely valuable and that capture the attention of and resonate with buyers most likely to appreciate a specific property’s benefits. Indeed, problem-solving through design and messaging is part of my DNA — so even when I’m away from the office, I’m likely still thinking about how to craft an effective image and message about a client’s home. And because my high-touch approach is not merely transactional, but strategic and marketing-driven, I often exceed expectations for price, terms and timeframe. That’s why sellers often engage me to energize aging listings that have languished on the market.
Joining Engel & Völkers Chicago marks my return to luxury home sales after a brief hiatus that enhanced my understanding of property development and construction management. Following a tradition passed down from my great-grandfather to my grandfather and, now, my sister, I spent 15 months managing highly-complex projects in the family construction business. There I reviewed blueprints, solicited and evaluated bids, sourced materials, scheduled tradespeople and oversaw the work to ensure it passed inspection, stayed on schedule and within budget. While earlier experience renovating my own single-family home and pre-war Lake Shore Drive condominium helped sensitize me to the challenges home buyers face when a property they’re considering requires significant renovation or when sellers must update a property in order to capture a sale — now I can help clients better evaluate a property’s potential and guide them through construction or renovation projects that more fully realize their objectives.
Too many brokers reduce real estate sales to an algorithm, stripping away the benefits of insight and experience. That may work in the moderate-price market or even for selling some higher-priced, but essentially conventional properties. But selling luxury homes requires deep knowledge of the marketplace and deep understanding of the desires and demands of those most likely to purchase one-of-a-kind residences. I bring to Engel & Völkers a powerful combination of real estate expertise and insight, design aesthetics, marketing strategy and construction management experience that can truly help my clients navigate the luxury home market.
My dedication to detail and to all things design, together with my love of working with my hands drive my off-hours activities. It’s this combination of skills and interests that empowered me to learn website programming: I enjoyed the challenges of mastering CSS and HTML, and building my first website was exhilarating. I enjoy street photography, studying the historical events that influenced my own family’s history — from pioneer trails to the present day, restoring my 1970 Karmann Ghia, cooking and sharing ethnic cuisine with family and friends, exploring the world’s great museums, and the sensations and new ways of viewing the world that traveling provide. I love living in Chicago, in spite of our cold winters, but I fantasize about designing and building a home in the dry warmth of Arizona or maybe in the sunny valleys of Italy.
“I first met Scott when we were both new to residential sales. I immediately recognized his extraordinary marketing prowess and our shared sensibility and approach to luxury real estate. We joined forces and within a couple of years were one of the top teams in the city,” observes Jennifer Ames, License Partner and President at Engel & Völkers Chicago. “We are delighted to welcome Scott to the Engel & Völkers Chicago team, and confident that he will be a sought-after advisor by our most discerning clients.”
